EKG (ELECTROCARDIOGRAM) - An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is an electrical measurement of the heart-beat or impulse, as it travels through the 4 chambers of the heart (there may be a prize for the person who can correctly name the 4 chambers).

With an EKG we can diagnose all kinds of cardiac related problems in dogs or cats. Among them are congestive heart failure, cardiomegally (enlarged heart), and cardiomyopathies (diseased heart muscles).

Also, many disturbances in electrolytes, other chemical imbalances, or even toxicities/poisonings can be diagnosed using an EKG. An EKG is an important tool in determining the health status of an animal. We also recommend an EKG as part of the pre-op assessment of any older patient undergoing anesthesia.

This patient was hooked up to the EKG machine during our open house. We were a little surprised to see that "Cinnamon" did actually have a heartbeat! I guess my daughter Lane was right after all.
